Japan nuclear power plant crisis

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 12:08 AM PDT

Japan is still battling to avert a nuclear meltdown at Fukushima No.1 nuclear power station, four days after it was crippled by the earthquake and tsunami.

Three of its four reactors had been hit by explosions, while the remaining one caught fire this morning. Residents within 20 kilometres had been asked to evacuate. And it’s now confirmed that radiation has been released into the atmosphere at levels that can damage human health (in nearby areas).

Low-level radioactive wind could reach further zones, including Tokyo which is located 240km away from the plant. The Japanese government will begin releasing nationwide data on this matter later today. Meanwhile, neighbouring countries like China and South Korea are also strengthening their monitoring of radiation levels.

The meltdown crisis has sparked concerns of the safety of nuclear plants around the world, especially those located at quake-prone areas. Safety precautions are never safe enough when it’s against extreme nature’s wrath.

Tom Cruise joins Chinese microblogging

Posted: 14 Mar 2011 01:49 AM PDT

Tom Cruise Sina WeiboAmerican actor Tom Cruise has opened an account at Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site similar to Twitter.

Many international social networking sites, e.g. Facebook and Twitter, are banned in China. But their local microblogging sites, obviously under scrutiny of the Chinese government, are blooming since 2009.

Many Chinese celebrities, including those from Hong Kong and Taiwan, have jumped on the bandwagon. A few Japanese stars have also become more popular than ever after joining these sites.

AFAIK Tom Cruise is the first Hollywood A-list actor to join the fun. He already has over 300,000 followers since activating his account on February 23, though it looks like his account is managed by his subordinates instead of him personally.
