Bend It Like Beckham in North Korea

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 10:59 PM PST

North Korea’s state-run television had broadcast British film Bend It Like Beckham on December 26, which is said to be the first ever western made film to air on TV in the country.

The broadcast had been arranged by the British embassy to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations. It was a rare treat for North Koreans whose state TV normally broadcasts self-boosting programs and images of its leaders, army, model farms and model villages.

The 2002 comedy, starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley, features a sport (football) beloved among North Koreans. The film is more about family values, interracial relationship and ‘bending’ the social norms though.

China Radio International, with support from the National Tourism Administration, has organised an online poll to pick the Top 10 Chinese Tourist Cities. More than five million votes were cast, and the winning cities were announced in early December. Below are some intros of the 10 destinations in none particular order…

Luoyang lies in the west of Henan, crossing two banks of the middle reach of Yellow River and is one of China’s Four Great Ancient Capitals. Its famous heritage sites include the Longmen Grottoes and the White Horse Temple. The city is also famous as a cultivation centre for peony, one of China’s famous emblems.

Malaysia won AFF Suzuki Cup

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 06:19 PM PST

Malaysia have clinched the AFF Suzuki Cup, the biggest football tournament in Southeast Asia, for the first time since the competition was inaugurated in 1996, after defeating Indonesia over a two-legged final with a 4-2 aggregate.

Southeast Asian countries are among the weakest footballing nations; none of the teams have ever featured in the World Cup, yet there’s still strong enthusiasm for the sport. The Malaysian government are so overjoyed with the achievement that Friday is declared a special public holiday (which I think is a bit too much).

The games were not without dramas; both nations are in a love-hate relationship for decades, and the Indonesians were not happy with the gimmicks of Malaysian fans at the first leg match in Kuala Lumpur. Armoured trucks and some 10,000 policemen were deployed to ensure the safety at the second leg in Jakarta; thankfully there’s no need for them to be called into full action.

Girls’ Generation AV copycat

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:46 PM PST

Korean pop group Girls’ Generation’s fans are enraged with a Japanese adult video which mimics the pop group’s fashion and style from their Genie’s marine concept.

Girls Generation Japanese AV

Unfortunately it’s quite a norm in AV industry to ‘copycat’ the famous celebrities. People who are familiar with Japanese entertainment would take the issue with a pinch of salt, though I suspect some might take it with a glee instead.
