Subway is world’s largest restaurant chain

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 09:14 PM PST

Subway sandwichSubway has surpassed McDonald’s as the world’s largest restaurant chain in terms of units. Subway had 33,749 restaurants around the globe at the end of 2010, while McDonald’s had 32,737.

Subway is not popular in Asia, only 1000+ of its outlets are in this region, less than 5% of its total units which are spread across 95 countries.

Its spokesperson has named India and China among its high growth nations, but it remains to be seen if they could survive in long run. Culturally Asians have yet to accept sandwich or burger as staple food.

And the idea of eating healthily – which Subway is famous for – works only in a few places in this part of the world. Pricing and taste prevail.

100 years of International Women’s Day

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 08:30 PM PST

March 8 2011, marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

The first IWD, initiated by a German woman named Clara Zetkin, was observed on 19 March 1911 in Germany and some neighbouring countries.

In 1975, which was designated as International Women’s Year, the United Nations gave official sanction to, and began sponsoring, International Women’s Day.

IWD is declared a public holiday in about two dozens of countries. In some European places it’s said to be a custom of giving women flowers on this day.

The lesser known International Men’s Day was inaugurated in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago. It’s celebrated on November 19.
